Youth Week Fun in Gordon Park

Queensland’s Youth Week was celebrated locally with Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) Parkfest Oakey event, which attracted close to 100 children, families and fun providers at Gordon Park last Wednesday.

PCYC’s Dusty Wilson was MC for the event (wearing his other hat as Youth Development Officer for Council).

Walking into Gordon Park from the Oakey Creek path meant walking through a laser tag battle held between holidaying children among the trees.

Hungry mouths were fed by Lois Thorne and her team of Oakey Lions, who provided free sausages.

All the fun was organised by Toowoomba Regional Council, and TRC Community Development Officer - West, Karen Suhl was busy making sure operations ran smoothly.

Those with a sweet tooth were catered for by two Crows Nest Community Services representatives

Toowoomba headspace was also there (headspace being the National Youth Mental Health Foundation’s service provider for 12-25 year olds).

The Service’s booklet defines good mental health as: “A state of wellbeing where you feel able to work and study, feel connected to others, are involved in activities in your community, and ‘bounce back’ when life’s changes and challenges come along.”

Toowoomba’s headspace centre is based at 1 Snell Street in the CBD, and provides face-to-face information, support and intervention (where appropriate) for young people aged 12 to 25.

Headspace also offers online and phone support for those who’d like a virtual meeting.
