Woolshed brings in New Year

The Oakey district celebrated the New Year with multiple events, including at the Jondaryan Woolshed and Gowrie Little Plain Hall.

The event attracted a mixed crowd, with the Nutbush being a particular favourite of the younger crowd.

The celebration at the Woolshed was the first since Covid and attracted a crowd of 320 with more than 50 people walking in on the night.

Ridgee Didge Bush Band led the dancing with some timeless bush jives, the Hokey Pokey, and the Chicken Dance some of the more notable ones.

Travellers made their way from across the Darling Downs and interstate to celebrate the New Year at the heritage-listed venue.

There was a good mix of young families and old regulars at the event, with a show of hands revealing a substantial contingent of attendees who hadn’t gone to a bush dance before.

Drinks and late night damper from the café were the best way for people to refresh themselves in between what was an energetic line-up of dances.

The event attracted TV coverage, with a local commercial network filming footage.

Volunteers were happy with the turnout as the results of their labours went on full display.

Campers visiting from Victoria told the Champion they had a fantastic night out and that it was a great place to bring in the New Year.

New Year’s Events were also held at the Gowrie Little Plain Hall (report on page 12) and at the Bowenville Hall.
