Will, meet Oakey
A large crowd of locals turned out to meet Repco Supercars leader and Toowoomba local Will Brown at Cornetts Supa IGA Oakey on Saturday.
A large roll-up of motoring enthusiasts and curious locals turned out to meet our own Supercars Championship leader.
Cornetts Supa IGA Oakey manager Tom Nolan said he was really happy with the turnout for the event which had been foreshadowed in-store and through advertising in The Oakey Champion.
“We’ve had an archway built by Red Bull with heavy merchandising, faced up ready to go, he said.
“People started rocking up at 9am which was great to see.”
Oakey Lions Club fed the crowd with a sausage sizzle, with produce donated by Cornetts.
Red Bull’s publicity officers brought caps and samples of Red Bull for the crowd to try.
A Red Bull DJ truck also made an appearance, with music pumping.
Will Brown said he was not a newcomer to Oakey, having made several trips to the town in the past to buy cars, including a Commodore HSV ClubSport from local Frederick Hurman.
“My aim is definitely to win the championship,” Brown said.
“Red Bull Ampol racing have given me everything they’ve got.”
Red Bull Ampol team mate Broc Feeney is also doing well, currently running third with three races to go on the calendar.
“As team mates, we get on quite well,” Brown said.
The pair are split by veteran Chaz Mostert in second spot, who is a past winner of the upcoming Bathurst 1000 race.
Brown says he’ll have to keep his wits about him to stay ahead of Mostert around Mount Panorama on Sunday 13 October.
“(Chaz has) a lot of experience,” he said.
“Bathurst is a hard one to know.
“There’s so much thrown at you. It’s anyone’s race.
“In the past as a young driver, you want to win it at the first lap but you have to be patient and take it as it comes.”
