Wattles Juniors End on High Note
The junior rugby league season is never over until it’s over, but Wattles President Aaron Gilmore, his committee and hard-working band of volunteers can now wrap up the 2024 season that commenced way back with that initial club working bee in February.
Wattles Juniors players took the field in the Peter Rafter Memorial Carnival and the Western Clydesdales Challenge in the past fortnight.
Last weekend saw the Warwick & District Chargers Junior Rugby League representative team head to Chinchilla for the inaugural Peter Rafter Memorial Carnival for Under 12 boys and Under 14 girls.
The Warwick & District side wore black arm bands in memory of respected Southern Downs rugby league identity the late Jack Duggan.
The Carnival had its beginnings way back in 1998 as the South West Division ‘Mustangs’ Under 12 Challenge, and after a few title changes is now named in honour of recently departed league administrator Peter Rafter.
Wattles players in the Under 12 boy’s line-up included Adam Butler, Matt Christensen, Dusty May, Jackson McMillan, Tom Peters, Lawson Turner, Rory Turner, Mick Willett and Levi Zadow.
Aside from the Warwick & District Under 12 combination, competing teams included the Brothers Leprechauns, Roma & District, South Burnett Eagles, Souths Logan Junior Magpies/Gatton Hawks, Stanley River Wolves, Warwick Collegians and the Western Downs Bulldogs.
Wattles weren’t represented in the Under 14 Girls competition, which included teams from Beerwah Bulldogs/Stanley Rivers Wolves, City, Gatton Hawks, Outback and the Pittsworth Danes.
Western Clydesdales Challenge - Warwick & District Chargers Under 16 boys and girls headed to Gold Park, Toowoomba on September 16th taking part in the annual Western Clydesdales Challenge.
The boy’s line-up was on the wrong end of the scoreboard in their initial game against Toowoomba City, but lifted with a strong performance to draw 12-12 all against Toowoomba Country.
While Wattles Juniors had no girls competing, green & gold boys included Patty Denny, Joe Llewellyn, Orry Gilmore, Zac Wheeldon and Ben Rauchle with Glen McMillan at the helm as coach.
