Wattles Host Jet Squadron
Saturday (27th July) saw the MIT (Millmerran-Inglewood-Texas) Jets converge on a chilly Platz Oval for Round 12 Warwick & District Junior Rugby League fixtures against the Wattles junior Warriors.
With the Jets not able to boast a full squadron of teams, all the action occurred in Under 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 & Under 15 Girls League Tag age grades.
Alas with MIT having to forfeit the Under 12 clash, Warwick’s Collegians Dragans filled the void thus allowing the Russell McMillan coached Wattles Under 12’s a much appreciated on field challenge.
Willett Electrical ‘Tackle Ready’ Under 7 - It was certainly a busy weekend Wattles Under 7 side taking on the junior Jets on Saturday morning, before heading west on Sunday to Inglewood for the final segment of the Under 7 junior rugby league ‘tackle ready program’.
Chase Johnstone, Olivia Mullen & Oliver Dore excelled scoring tries against the Jets on Saturday.
Coach Ross Williams praised the effort of all his young players with good performances all round, “but more work is needed at training this week.”
Sunday’s ‘tackle ready program’ completion saw Wattles play four games of fifteen-minute halves putting their fitness to the test, matching up against Stanthorpe, MIT, Collegians and Goondiwindi.
The Under 7’s have graduated from the ‘tackle ready program’ and can now tackle in matches for the remainder of the season.
“All our youngsters are certainly looking forward to playing and using their new skills taking on the Goondiwindi Boars for their first real tackle game at Platz Oval in Saturday’s giant Super Saturday of junior and senior rugby league.” according to coach Ross.
Black Toyota, Warwick Under 10 - Wattles impressive Under 10 line-up bounced back to their attacking best against the Jets running in an amazing eleven tries to one for a convincing win.
“It was very pleasing to see the team work together on defence and attack” said coach Chris Ryan.
Everyone contributes in a great effort, and it showed in the score line.
All In Electrical Under 15 Girls League Tag - The Under 15 girls enjoyed a confidence boosting 34 – 0 overwhelming win over the Jets.
“While they started the game with a few nerves, and there were some errors as a result” said coach George Berry, “they soon found their rhythm and completed their sets better than any game this season”.
“Once again our defence held strong denying our opposition points”.
Wattles kicking game was “top notch” and it was exciting to see the players try some attacking kicks deep in the opposition half.
The home team’s spine players all had great games, with fullback Zoey Sweet scoring a hat trick of tries and on target with five goals from six attempts.
Halfback Teeah Davis also crossed for a try, as did dummy half Mia Berry and centre Tori Sweet.
Many Wattles players made encouraging breaks, many unlucky not to have resulted in tries.
Super Saturday - Clifton’s Platz Oval will come alive as a festival of rugby league this Saturday, a Super Saturday with Wattles Juniors up against the Goondiwindi Boars and Wattles senior teams doing battle against the Warwick Cowboys.
Adding to the atmosphere the senior Warriors club are hosting a reunion of players from the 2014 season, including the A Grade premiership team from that year.
