Tour de Wyreema

Many of Queensland’s top road cyclists of all ages made the trip to Wyreema last weekend, racing up and down Umbiram Road for the first round of the AusCycling QLD ITT (individual time trial) Series.

The event, originally scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday, had to be cut down to just Sunday after sustained rainfall had flooded parts of Umbiram Road towards Southbrook.

The course also had to be shortened as some of the road was still waterlogged and criterium races, scheduled concurrently on Saturday at Glenvale, were completely cancelled.

Among the event organisers was Louise Jones from AusCycling, a two-time British Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medal winner.

Ms Jones said she was very impressed with the quality of Umbiram Road and that Wyreema is a great location.

The event organisers thanked Wyreema State School for allowing them the use of its grounds and facilities and also thanked the Wyreema community for welcoming them.

The weather was not the only thing wreaking havoc on the race, with one of Queensland’s top cyclist Nick Banks-Watson having to pull out just days before the event after contracting COVID-19.

Deputy Mayor Geoff McDonald was on hand to present winners with their medals.

Cr McDonald said it is great to be able to host events in the Toowoomba Region, which has a good strong history of cycling.

Cyclists from cycling clubs across Queensland came to Wyreema, including the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Townsville and many clubs in Brisbane.
