Toowoomba basketball legend shares his skills
Local basketball great, Clarence "Pop" Dickerson, made a guest appearance at Under Eights Day event hosted by Oakey State School recently to share some of his ball skills and teach the importance of sports and staying active to local young people.
The, now retired from professional basketball, Toowoomba resident played for the Toowoomba Mountaineers in the 1980s and 1990s as well as coaching the Gold Coast Warriors and the Mountaineers.
Dickerson, who nows runs basketball camps and workshops in the Darling Downs, travelled to Oakey to work with some of the over 250 students who attended the Under Eights Day event.
Children from Oakey State School, St Monica’s Primary School, Little Champions Childcare, Kids Patrol Oakey, C&K Oakey Community Pre-School and Kindergarten took part in the day which featured a range of outdoor activities.
The Oakey Ambulance Officer-in-Charge Jacqui Fitzgerald as well as representatives from the Oakey Library and Oakey State High School also attended the session.
An initiative of Early Childhood Australia (ECA), the state-wide Under Eights Week brings together children from day care, schools, playgroups and communities across Queensland celebrate their early years of life.
This year the theme ‘Theme - Children Celebrating Outdoor Play & Learning’ focused on activities and programs held outside and in the natural environment.
