The Oakey band playing at gigs in Brisbane
Local band Palinola, which began at Oakey State High School in 2022, has made its Brisbane debut this year.
Palinola, who identify as alt-rock/metal, consists of four regular members:
Patrick Back - lead vocalist/guitar, Oakey
Ambrose Barton - bass guitarist, Toowoomba
Brady Wilson - drummer, Pittsworth
Hamish Sharpe-Liston - lead guitar/vocals, Oakey
Band lead Back, who Oakey locals might recognise as a bakery barista on Campbell Street and Kerrytown, formed the band with Sharpe-Liston for a Triple J Unearthed competition while the pair was attending Oakey State High School with help from music teacher Mr Grimley.
Back said the inspiration for the band’s name came from a Google search.
“The word Palinola means ‘to do something over and over again until it’s perfect,’ and I thought that summed us up,” he said.
In Toowoomba they performed in TRC’s Battle of the Bands in 2022 where they came second.
After leaving school, Back and Sharpe-Liston put out a call on social media for a drummer and bassist, from which sprang current band members Ambrose Barton from Toowoomba and Brady Wilson from Pittsworth.
2024 has been a breakout year for the band, which performed at the DIY Festival organised by Dead Trigger Records.
After doing gigs at the Mouse Proof and Bone Idle breweries in Toowoomba, they’ve started to test the waters down the range.
In Brisbane, they’ve performed on stage at well-known venues Tomcat, PFR Lounge and most recently at The Brightside, which Back describes as a surreal moment.
“It was cool to play on stage,” he said.
“I’d been to gigs there before so I was definitely freaking out.
“In saying that - we played really well - it’s probably the best we’ve gone yet.”
Despite having performed in Brisbane, the band still retained its local roots, practising once a week in Back’s residence in Oakey.
Palinola has just recorded a debut EP which Back said will be released soon.
“Anyone who is interested in following us can look us up on social media - just search ‘Palinola’ and we’ll come up.”
