Several trees and a four-wheel-drive utility were seriously damaged in the crash on Clifton-Leyburn Road, but the driver appeared to have had luck on his side.

Ambulance paramedics and firefighters from Clifton along with Leyburn police were despatched to the scene on the Clifton-Leyburn Road at Ellangowan soon after 3.20pm.

They found the vehicle wedged hard against a tree however the male driver was out of the cabin and able to walk.

Paramedics assessed the man and treated a minor laceration on his arm before transporting him in a stable condition to the Toowoomba Hospital.

Skid marks on the road indicated that the vehicle was travelling west before veering to the incorrect side of the carriageway and crashing through several small trees before slamming into a larger tree.

Leyburn Police Senior Constable Brendan Stokes said the driver, a Gympie man aged about 60, had been travelling to Inglewood where he is planning to take up residence in the future.

He told Senior Constable Stokes that the rear wheel of the vehicle left the bitumen and when it hit the gravel the vehicle became unstable.

In trying to correct it, he over-steered and applied the brakes.

The vehicle swerved and hit an embankment before crashing through trees on the northern side of the road.
