Study continues into future use of former Oakey Depot

Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) has confirmed that a full site analysis is underway at the former Oakey Depot site which will assist the development of a business case to examine future uses of the facility.

The former Oakey Depot site on Lorrimer Street has been empty since Council workers vacated the facility about a year ago.

TRC Property Services portfolio leader Cr James O’Shea said the proposal to develop a business case for future uses of the site was endorsed in January.

He said the current site analysis will inform this business case.

“This analysis comprises complex land designation matters and other business case development requirements, including detailed scope development, ongoing stakeholder engagement, financial, risk, and implementation processes,” Cr O’Shea said.

“Once the business case development is completed, the final report, including recommendations, will be presented to Council for consideration.

“Council is determined to see the site returned to productive use for the benefit of the Oakey community.”

The business case which Council is investigating involves keeping some community use of the site as well as creating a Business Incubator and Training Hub centre within the facility, which may involve connecting with the high school and tertiary training providers to promote business growth and develop employment opportunities, especially for young people.
