Students set for CGEN spectacular
Creative Generation - State Schools Onstage is Queensland’s largest youth performing arts event for state school students and a number of students from the local region are taking part this week.
Staged by the Department of Education, Training and Employment, Creative Generation - State School on stage (CGEN) showcases the talents of dancers, singers and musicians from across Queensland state schools who take the stage with some of Australia’s leading performing artists.
The event, this Thursday to Saturday at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, covers a mix of musical genres such as classical, rock, pop, hip-hop, gospel, musical theatre and jazz.
CGEN gives students, teachers and school communities the chance to be involved in a professionally produced, award-winning arena spectacular.
Since its inception in 2005, the event has grown from a cast of 550 students to 1800.
The Massed Choir will incorporate the voices of about 600 students who will perform significant choral feature works.
The show features 800 dancers and 100 musicians, while drama students, featured and backing vocalists round out cast.
Participating students in the Pittsworth cluster have committed to weekly rehearsals in Pittsworth, as well as rehearsals and performances in Brisbane.
The Pittsworth cluster includes students from Pittsworth State School, Biddeston State School, Mt Tyson State School, Southbrook Central and Pittsworth State High School.
(Students from Dalby, Harristown, Highfields and Lockyer will also be involved in this year’s CGEN.)
This year’s performances will showcase the talents of a number of Pittsworth State School students:
•Featured vocalist Lilly Lord (Pittsworth SS).
•Featured Junior Dancer Piper Southey (Pittsworth SS).
•Musical Theatre Dancer Ashford McEwan (Pittsworth SHS).
•Massed strings musicians Kalana Cheetham (Pittsworth SS) and Lucy Peters (Mt Tyson SS).
Producer Liz Williamson said Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage is the thrilling culmination of five months of auditions, workshops and rehearsals for hundreds of cast and crew drawn from 134 state schools from across Queensland.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for Queensland state school students to showcase their creativity and talent,” she said.
“Celebrating 18 years in 2022, CGEN continues to provide students of all levels of performance ability, the incredible opportunity to meet, learn from and perform with some of Australia’s most creative artists.”
