Students dress in red for child safety awareness
Students across Queensland celebrated State Education Week, World Teachers’ Day and the importance of child safety last week by dressing up on Friday for Day for Daniel.
"Today, for State Schools is a great day,” Principal of Pittsworth State School (PSS) Carol Ann Coonan said.
“This week is State Education Week.
"We're dressed in red, as today is the 20th anniversary of Day for Daniel.
"We wear red today to acknowledge the profound work of Denise and Bruce Morcombe, through the Day for Daniel Foundation,” Mrs Coonan said.
Day for Daniel is a National Day of Action hosted by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention.
“Through an absolute tragedy, and horrific incident has come the greatest focus of child safety in this nation,” Mrs Coonan said.
"We know that each and every one of us are here for the purpose of protecting our most vulnerable, for protecting each other, protecting our children, and to have Bruce and Denise and the Day for Daniel Foundation as the beacon for that, it reminds us constantly what we are here to do.”
Students at PSS performed The Fight Song for parents and teachers, and recited the three ‘R’s of child safety: recognise, react and report.
Being State Education Week, the school also publicly recognised student Anna Perry who received the 2024 Mayoral School Achievement Award.
Certificates were given out to students for their participation in the ICAS assessments in math, science, English and spelling.
A number of students participated in the Farm Safety Calendar competition and were recognised for their entries.
Karen Pomerenke and Karen Draper were acknowledged for their service as School Safety Crossing Supervisors.
Since the School Safety Crossing initiative was implemented in 1984, there have been no fatalities from students walking to and from school.
St. Joseph’s Primary School in Millmerran also recognised Day for Daniel, with students wearing red for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
Classes from years 3/4 and 5/6 presented a special liturgy for World Teachers’ Day, celebrated annually on the last Friday in October.
