Brief stopover leaves an impression
A morning tea stop on Friday May 6 for participants in a tourist trip left the travellers with a favourable impression of Clifton, even though most didn’t wander far from the railway station.
Several of the visitors remarked on the hospitality they were afforded and the thrill of being able to spend a short time in a country town.
Host of the ten-day rail tour was Scott McGregor known for over 30 years as an actor, presenter, writer and producer.
Scott appeared in roles including lead in the mini-series 1915 and the Coral Island and many years as the handyman on Better Homes and Gardens and host of Room For Improvement.
He established Railway Adventures in 2012.
This trip, The Borderland Adventure, saw 63 tourists hear the history of the border and the towns they visited in Southern Queensland and Northern New South Wales.
They travelled by steam train to Goondiwindi and rail motor from Moree to Armidale via Werris Creek.
They again boarded the Southern Downs Steam train at Wallangarra, spent a night in Warwick and on Friday stopped for morning tea at Clifton before heading to Toowoomba for a late lunch in DownsSteam’s dining cars.
“What we celebrate on the trip is the work of volunteers in the country,” Scott McGregor said.
“Without them we’d be lost - it adds more to the journey to be able to involve the volunteers
“We feel we’ve put in something for the communities we visit even for a short time
“There’s a great collaboration with the Southern Downs Steam people and the volunteers such as the [Clifton] Progress Association serving morning tea.”
