The team flies out this Saturday to play three matches against New Zealand teams.

While there, they  will also undertake numerous cross-cultural activities, designed to challenge them and develop their knowledge of Maori culture and customs.

Initially an Indigenous-only team, the criteria have since been expanded to make the Southwest Emus a ‘culturally inclusive’ event.

Manager Gary Halliday explains:

“Our vision for the tour is ‘One Community, One People, One Game’,” he said.

“This is achieved by bringing players, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, together from across the region to show unity and reconciliation between cultures.

“Not only is the tour about football, it also allows our members to experience new opportunities and to commit to working towards a more equal and respectful future.

“(It’s our hope) they will be empowered to strive for better outcomes in health, education, sport and development.”

Good luck Emus!
