Allora’s Margaret Hart and her friend Ruth Ronan (inset) will be racing this Holden Commodore in the Mystery Box Rally.

The night is being hosted by social member Margaret Hart.

Margaret, from Allora, and her friend Ruth Ronan, from Melbourne, will be taking part in the 2024 Mystery Box Rally under the team name ‘Great Mates’.

Margaret’s husband David Smith is the President of Clifton Bowls Club and together they organise the weekly meals at the club every Friday night.

Margaret said the money raised from the night will go towards the Cancer Council Rally.

The rally, which lasts five days, departs from Airlie Beach on 16 August and follows a route that is kept secret from the participants.

Transporting Margaret and Ashley on the journey will be a 1997 Holden Commodore station wagon.

A condition of entry, in order to level the playing field, is that vehicles entered must be more than 25 years old.

Margaret said the Commodore comes with rally experience, having taken part in last year’s rally from Cairns to Adelaide under a previous owner.

Margaret and Ruth purchased the car in Victoria in preparation for the race.

A local mechanic, Allora’s Carsmart, will be assessing the vehicle in the lead-up to the race.

It has already had its roof relined as well as work on the handbrake and other bits and pieces.

Ms Hart said 80 per cent of the funding raised from the rally will go straight to the Cancer Council while the remaining 20 per cent goes towards organisation of the rally itself.

The money raised is targeted towards universities and similar institutions that conduct cancer research.

Margaret said raising money to combat cancer is especially important for her as she lost both her mother and sister to the dreaded illness at reasonably young ages.

It’s the first opportunity she’s had to participate in such a rally since retiring from full-time work.

The Great Mates team have already raised over $4,100 for the Cancer Council.

The wide selection of seafood includes prawns, oysters, mussels, bugs and crabs, and will be accompanied by salads and desserts.

It will be supplied by Tony, Sue and Thomas from Aussie Fresh Seafoods in Warwick.

The cost is $75 per person and tickets can be obtained by phoning Margaret after 2.30pm on 0432 617 044.

Those interested should book right away as tickets  are limited to 100 and must be ordered and paid for by next Friday.

Tickets will be posted out or alternatively can be picked up at the Clifton Bowls Club on Fridays after 4pm.

Only ticket holders will be admitted to the Club on this night.

Clifton businesses can also take the opportunity to sponsor the car and be featured on it when it races.
