Schoolkids combine Lego with robotics

How many adults would know where to start if asked to program a robot?

A day of fun, intensity and innovative learning.
A day of fun, intensity and innovative learning.

But that’s exactly what a bunch of students from our local primary schools did at the First Lego League Competition held in the Clifton State High School hall.

Sponsored by Lego, the schools are sent a robot that the students need to program for an interschool challenge where their robots are required to perform a series of tasks within a short time period.

The intensity of the students was obvious upon entering the hall as this was obviously serious business... robotics business.

This is a world where young primary aged students are comfortable and most adults are not.

Students threw around terminology such as coding, interfacing, and laser sensors like they were working for NASA or Tesla.

The day had some serious educational benefits around robotics but also helps primary aged students begin to feel comfortable in the bigger school where they might find themselves in a few years.

Coordinator Lara Waters from Back Plains State School and all teachers involved deserve high praise.

No robots were hurt during the event.
