Restoring Leyburn’s voice
Community-minded Leyburn residents are banding together to reinstate the Leyburn Progress Association.
The push to give Leyburn a louder voice has been spearheaded by Tricia Chant.
Mrs Chant organised a meeting recently to gauge interest, which was held at the RSL.
She said the attendance of 23 was more than she had anticipated.
The discussion was productive and now Mrs Chant and the other attendees are in the process of reinstating the Leyburn Progress Association.
She said it has been quite a number of years since the association folded, which had happened for a number of reasons including people coming and going and a lack of resources.
The idea is that Leyburn will have a committee that will hold regular meetings as well as public meetings, all working towards making improvements in the town.
Mrs Chant said she had already spoken to two Southern Downs Region councillors who had been supportive.
“We’re looking to tackle projects and take a collaborative approach with council.
“We can do things by ourself or with their help.”
Mrs Chant is a member of the Shaping Southern Downs Advisory Committee, of which she will be attending a meeting of next week.
She said the group is looking for more community members from Leyburn and nearby areas to join the committee, with a meeting to be held in mid-July to establish the Incorporated Association.
“We are looking to have representatives from each of the major community groups in town,” she said.
“Our plan is to meet regularly as a committee, and then approximately every three months hold a community meeting to keep everyone up to date.
“We’re hoping everyone can be proud of the town.”
