Restoring gaol to its former glory
A donation of $5,000 from Rudd’s Pub and its social club to the Nobby Heritage and Development Association will go a long way towards a bold plan to relocate and restore the old Nobby gaol.
Rudd’s Pub owner Evan Jones said the funds were raised during the pub’s Steele Rudd Memorial opening held recently, as well as through the efforts of the social club.
The gaol currently sits in a paddock on Allan Jackson’s property out of town, where it has been for some time.
Mr Jones said it was moved around the same time the Nobby police station and police house were moved to Clifton.
Although the relocation is only in the early stages of planning, Mr Jones and the Nobby Heritage and Development Association hope to see it clearly visible in Sister Kenny Park on Tooth Street, where it will complement the Nobby Railway Station and Sister Kenny Park.
Mr Jones said a meeting has been arranged with Toowoomba Regional Council, owner of the park, to see how the proposal can move forward.
Despite its age and lack of use, the building is in a fair condition.
Many local tradesmen have been kind enough to offer their services in renovating the building and transporting it.
The gaol was originally on the corner of Tooth and Comerford streets.
