Red meat exports outperform year-ago levels
Australian beef export sales for the month of August were reportedly 23 per cent higher than July’s sales, and 19 per cent stronger than levels this time last year.

In August, Australian beef exports reached 92,080 tonnes – the highest monthly total since June 2020.
Beef exports rose in all major markets but increases were especially pronounced in South Korea (43 per cent year-on-year) and China (37 per cent year-on-year).
This is the break down of exports per market:
- Korea accounted for 20%
- Greater China accounted for 20%
- Japan accounted for 24%
- USA accounted for 17%,
- Other markets made up the balance (about 19 per cent).
Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) attributes this increase in beef exports to significant growth in grassfed exports.
While grainfed exports rose by 13 per cent year-on-year, grassfed exports rose by 23 per cent to 62,752 tonnes.
Although higher than July, chilled beef exports fell by 9 per cent year-on-year to 20,400 tonnes.
Both lamb and goat meat exports performed well.
Lamb exports to the emerging market of South-East Asia rose by 70 per cent on July 2022 volumes and goat exports in August were 90 per cent higher than year-ago levels.
