Quinalow State School choir shines in Eisteddfod win
The high performing Quinalow State School primary-aged choir proves that size doesn’t matter, winning the Best Small School Choir trophy in the 2021 Dalby Eisteddfod as well as several other first place section prizes.
The choir, made up of students between the classes of Prep and Year 6 competed against other schools from across the district in the folk and hymn sections.
A smaller group of senior singers also entered a concert item section and performed a lively song from ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’.
Their wins in these sections made them a clear front-runner for the overall trophy.
Quinalow State School teacher Ruth Watts said choir is an integral part of the small school.
“Since I began the program about 15 years ago singing has become a tradition at the school and in the wider community,” she said.
“It’s huge for the students. They perform at school and local events and we have entered the Eisteddfod almost every year.”
Ms Watts said the hard work put in by the current and former students has seen the school win almost every year they have entered the Dalby event.
She credits the overall enthusiasm and level of input by the students for the program’s success.
“We have about 40 kids in the choir. It’s about 80 per cent of all the students in the primary school,” Ms Watts said.
“Choir is voluntary and the students commit to lunchtime and afternoon practices.
“The parents have also been fantastic supporting the program.
“The students just love being a part of the choir and they get a lot from it.
“They are always soo grateful to be able to perform. I find that at the beginning of every year I have students asking me when choir will begin and excited to start up again.”
