Over the weekend the Downs Polo club hosted its first club tournament of the Queensland Polo Season.

This tournament marked the first of seven tournaments set to be played at the Clifton grounds.

The Downs Polo Club is one of the oldest in Queensland with records games played on the Darling Downs as early as 1897, with players gathering at the Club hotel by the turn of the century to form the Downs Polo Association.

It’s the very same club which still gathers at the Club hotel to plan its tournaments for the upcoming season.

Play was kept to the number two field at the Clifton show grounds over the weekend, but thanks to the hard work of grounds keeper Bruce Gilbert and a few lucky showers of rain over the past few weeks, both polo fields are looking spectacular and set the stage for an excellent season of polo to come.

Polo returns to the Clifton show grounds next weekend for another club tournament, on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th April, followed by the historic Eager’s Shield tournament on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th April.

The Eager’s Shield has been contested at the Clifton club for over 65 years.

All spectators are welcome to the Downs Polo Club tournaments.

For a lovely day out, pack your picnic and head on down to the next tournament.
