Plans submitted for Nobby café

A Toowoomba couple has formally lodged an application with Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) for approval to create a café in the former Pepperina Gallery in the main street of Nobby.

Subject to approval, Nobby’s business centre will be enhanced with the addition of a new food and rink outlet in the old Brodie & Co. building on Tooth Street.
Subject to approval, Nobby’s business centre will be enhanced with the addition of a new food and rink outlet in the old Brodie & Co. building on Tooth Street.

Amanda and Peter Roberts are hoping to be able to re-purpose the building to provide an additional food and drink outlet in the village, which is a popular stopover spot for tourists.

Mr and Mrs Roberts plan to add a structure at the rear of the building to accommodate a commercial kitchen, laundry and amenities.

They will retain the garden area which is already being developed into a quiet, relaxing space on the premises.

The application indicates that the maximum number of people to be accommodated at any one time would be fifty.

It is proposed to open for brunches and lunches from Thursdays to Sundays and for dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Initial discussions with TRC indicated that there was a concern over parking.

The Council wanted eight parking spaces to be provided.

However the developers found that the cost of creating this on site would be prohibitive.

The report noted that Nobby is unsewered and the backyard of the proposed development site is required for on-site effluent disposal for the development, which restricts the opportunity to provide car parking within the site.

Mr and Mrs Roberts  then engaged a firm of consultants to undertake a Parking Demand Analysis (i.e. a traffic report).

The report concluded that there would be sufficient space on Tooth Street to accommodate the eight spaces, and more.

The old building in which the café would be created was constructed in 1898 by the Greenmount-based retailer D. Brodie & Co.
