Pittsworth Senior Citizens Club marks a magnificent milestone
The Pittsworth Senior Citizens Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary on April 30th with a luncheon held at the Senior Citizen’s Club building, which was beautifully decorated for the occasion.
Although the 30th of April last year officially marked 50 years since the club’s first public meeting in 1970, COVID-19 restrictions meant members could not hold any celebratory events, so they decided to recognise the milestone this year instead.
All financial members of the club, with the exception of one, and some distinguished guests gathered at midday to indulge in a mouth-watering roast meal followed by dessert.
The guests included David Sterling who attended the luncheon to represent his father, Ross Sterling, who was the Chairman of the Pittsworth Shire Council at the time.
Ros Scotney OAM, the current president of the Rotary Club of Pittsworth, also attended to represent that club at the event.
The Rotary Club played a significant role in the formation of the Senior Citizens Club.
Unfortunately Norma Warfield and her husband Lindsay were unable to make it to represent Norma’s father, Jack Zerner, who was the first president of the Rotary Club.
Royd Mahoney and his wife Bernice were there to represent Royd’s mother, Peg Mahoney, who was the first treasurer of the Senior’s Club.
Finally, representatives of the first executive also attended the luncheon.
At the event, Moya Mitchell, current president of the Senior Citizen’s Club, welcomed everyone and gave a brief speech detailing the club’s rich history.
It is fitting that Ms Mitchell is so heavily involved as her father, Moran Daly, was the first secretary of the club.
Ms Mitchell, on behalf of the seniors, was also presented with a framed Certificate of Congratulations from the Rotary club.
Between the formalities of the event, guests enjoyed a hearty meal and socialised with their fellow club members.
The roast meal was cooked and delivered by owners of the Pittsworth IGA, Shane and Tracey Smith, and other IGA staff.
Following the main meal, a cake, made by Ms Mitchell and her friend, was cut by Ms Scotney and Mr Sterling before guests enjoyed jelly, fruit and custard for dessert, made by two members of the club.
Three students from Pittsworth State High School, who are studying hospitality, and their tutor set the tables for the event before plating up the meals and waiting on the guests.
Ms Mitchell said she is extremely grateful for all those who helped make the event a success.
Overall, the luncheon, which was a fitting way to celebrate the club’s 50 year anniversary, was enjoyed by all.
