Pittsworth Scouts receive prestigious awards
A number of awards were presented last Friday, at the Scout Den in Quarry Street, most notably the Silver Koala award received by Assistant Scout Leader Paul “Rhino” Drummond for his distinguished service as a scout leader over the years.
Past and present Scouts, and committee members gathered at the Scout Den to celebrate Rhino’s achievement.
“Tonight, he’s [Rhino] receiving the Silver Koala, which is for exceptional service to the Scout movement, over and above his required role as Scout Leader,” Darling Downs Region Commissioner, Kerry Harrison said.
“He has committed himself, his time, and his efforts, to look after, teach and train new young people.
“And in recognition of that, he’s been awarded the Silver Koala,” Mr Harrison said.
Rhino was also presented with a medallion and certificate.
Group leader, Stacey Schultz, said “Rhino would have to be the most caring, kind, generous person, that you could ever wish to have involved with young people.
“He’s an amazing role model to so many people.
“He’s extremely humble, and we’re really lucky to have him here in our group,” she said.
Rhino has been a leader in the Scout movement for 25 years.
His father and his wife were present on the night to see him receive the award.
Past and present students were invited to speak, and Ava Schultz said Rhino was the best leader and mentor she could have had.
“He got me started working on my Australian Scout Award, and helped me through a big part of that,” she said.
Jo and Wayne Saal’s family started with Scouts over 20 years ago, when Rhino was a leader.
“He got our boys through their Australian Scouting Medallions, and for them to come back tonight, I think that shows you are very deserving of this award, and they appreciated your guidance.
“And all the fun activities, and weekends - they loved it.
“Thanks Rhino, from us as a family, so keep going!” Mrs Saal said.
Another award, the Grey Wolf, was presented on the night to Matthew Sacagio.
This is the highest award you can earn in the Cub Scout section.
“I’m particularly impressed with Matthew’s growth,” Ms Schultz said.
“This boy was so quiet, very shy, but now he’s much more outgoing and willing to try new things.
“Everyone has supported Matthew in his journey so far.
“I’m really excited to see him continue with Pittsworth Scout group,” she said.
A number of other badges were received by Scouts at the presentation such as Outdoor Adventure Skills including Bushcraft, Bushwalking and Camping.
