Pittsworth Post Office welcomes new owne

More than just mail, Post Offices are the beating heart of country towns. Now, after more than 14 years as proprietors of the Pittsworth Post Office, Peter and Karen Miller are handing over the keys to new owner Rachel Anagnostopoulos tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Millers assumed ownership of the post office from Bev and Allan Petersen in December 2009.

After months of training, they officially took over on April 1 the following year.

Mrs Miller remembers that first day vividly, (which happened to be April Fools’ Day) as everything that could have gone wrong did!

“It was disastrous,” she said.

“I couldn’t open the safe, so we had no money or stamps.

“I sorted the mail backwards.

“There was a massive amount of people through the shop that day, wanting to meet the new owners.”

Despite the overwhelming first day, the Millers have brought an impeccable standard of dedication and personalised service to the Pittsworth community over many years.

The new owner, Mrs Anagnostopoulos, is looking forward to taking on the challenge of postmaster.

She said the transfer of ownership has been a long and intense process.

Her focus will be matching up Australia Post’s expectations with the personalised customer service that the local community is used to.

Mrs Anagnostopoulos and her family have lived in Pittsworth since 2022, and she has two young children aged five and three, with another on way, due later this month.

The Millers decided that now was the ideal time to sell, with their oldest child finishing school later this year.

The running of the post office has very much been a family business with both of their kids, Emily and Ben, working the counter and doing parcel runs over the years.

Mrs Miller said it took time to find the right buyer.

“We spent time finding someone that knows Pittsworth,” she said.

“We turned down lots of buyers until we found the right one."

Looking ahead to the future, Mrs Miller plans to continue with her full-time position at Toowoomba Grammar School.

As for Pittsworth’s much-loved postie, Peter, there are no concrete plans as to what his future holds, but retirement is not on the cards just yet.

The Millers are confident that the post office services will continue to run just as efficiently under the care of new owner, Mrs Anagnostopoulos.

Residents are invited to drop by this week and introduce themselves to the new owner of the Pittsworth Post Office.
