The Lions Youth of the Year program has a proud history in encouraging and fostering leadership skills in Australian students approaching the end of their high school years.
By emphasising qualities like contribution to the community and school, public speaking, academic skills, sporting and cultural involvement, Youth of the Year aims to develop the next generation of outstanding young Australians.
On Saturday Pittsworth Lions Club hosted the Region Final for this year’s competition at the Function Centre.
Three entrants took part: Rheanca Lincoln from the Glennie School, who was sponsored by the Lions Club of Toowoomba-Wilsonton; Marcus Landers from Toowoomba State High, sponsored by Toowoomba Inc. and Lachie Crighton from Pittsworth State High who represented the Pittsworth club.
Judges for the day were Ros Scotney OAM, Helen Everingham and Rev. Lionel Rohrlach.
Each candidate met with the judges for a 30-minute interview during the morning.
For the public speaking section of the competition, each student had two two-minute impromptu questions, then a five-minute prepared speech on a topic of their own choice.
The audience enjoyed afternoon tea while the judges deliberated.
The three entrants were congratulated by the judges on their presentation, their achievements and their contributions to their schools and communities.
Marcus received the Public Speaking Award and Rheanca was announced as the Youth of the Year.
She will now go on to the District judging at Redcliffe on March 25.
District Chairperson Lion Narelle Gluer presented participation certificates to the three entrants, awards
to the winners and certificates of appreciation to the judges.
