Petria is Oakey’s Showgirl

Petria Okkonen was crowned Oakey’s Showgirl for 2024 at the Oakey Show Dinner on Saturday night at Greenwood Hall

The evening was well attended, with guests enjoying a prepared meal.

Newly crowed Show Queen Petria Okkonen, spoke about how the role developed character and forced her to step outside of her comfort zone.

Rural Ambassador Louise Byers spoke about her family’s long history with the show and paid tribute to the influence her grandparents Kevin and Norma Byers had had on her growing up.

Junior Showgirl Lucy Brownsey and Junior Rural Ambassador Clare Matthewson also spoke confidently.

Mini Showgirl Olivia Knight was one of the highlights of the night, putting a smile on many faces.

Cr James O’Shea was the MC for the occasion and used his journalistic background to good effect in interviewing those on stage. 

Sponsors McLean Care and Oakey Electrical provided representatives.

The 2023 Showgirls and Rural Ambassadors were on hand to pass over the baton to the current representatives and all spoke enthusiastically about how the role of showgirl had positively impacted their lives.

The Oakey Show will take place on Saturday 16th March. 

Excitement is also building for the show itself as several attractions have been revealed.

Celebrity Chef Jason Roberts will be demonstrating his skills on an open fire at the Show with NH Foods.

The Show Committee says it is looking forward to the return of the Ray White Rural Oakey Dog Jump at 4:30pm on Saturday afternoon.  

Primary age children and under are reminded to pick up a colouring-in sheet from the New Acland Coal office and return it by this Friday 8th of March.

Entries are starting to come in and the Society is looking forward to welcoming exhibitors, competitors and patrons when the gates open at 8am on Saturday week.

Members who have paid their membership by next Monday the 11th of March go into the Member Draw and have a chance to win $100 courtesy Westgarths.

The show office is open this week from 10am until 1.30pm each day - enter via Showgrounds Road.  Non-perishable early entries are welcome this week.

From Monday the 11th of March the office will be open from 9am until 5pm.
