Paintings draw nature in closer
Toowoomba landscape artist Rob Raymond, who many will remember as a teacher at Pittsowrth High School where he taught art for 35 years, launched solo exhibition, Views from My Studio, on May 3.
The exhibition will be at Goombungee’s Rosalie Art Gallery and features natural scenes bathed in light, as seen from his studio looking out from the Silver Ridge escarpment.
The work has a vibrancy that perhaps hints at the change in location since retiring.
For many years Rob focussed on the browns of the plains, then the greyish browns of granite country after he and Dot bought a winery at Stanthorpe.
By contrast the views around his Silver Ridge studio are endless variations and combinations of greens that change with the seasons and with the weather.
“All the works are completed in my studio and taken from drawings based on the escarpment around Silver Ridge and Middle Ridge, as seen from the studio,” Rob said.
“Through the process of painting, I hope to offer the viewer new insights into familiar surrounds.”
His creative process involves creating remarkably detailed sketching, then quick gouache paintings of a scene before embarking on the larger piece.
The exhibition will be on display from May 3 to 28.
Rosalie Gallery, at 89 Mocatta Street, Goombungee is open 10.30am to 3.30pm Wednesday to Sunday and closed Monday, Tuesday and public holidays.
Entry is free.
