Old Kurrajong decided it was time to go

Mere weeks after Anzac Day the old Kurrajong tree that has provided shade for many an Anzac Day commemoration service in Clifton decided it had seen enough and came crashing down around midday on Friday, 31 May.

Nature brought the tree down safely without causing any damage.
Nature brought the tree down safely without causing any damage.

The tree, estimated at around thirty years old and seven to eight metres in height, did the right thing and came down with a  loud crack but chose a quiet time of the day with nobody around.

Friday was a windy day which no doubt helped the Kurrajong decide it had presided over the Clifton Cenotaph long enough and it was good enough to avoid nearby power lines and parked cars.

Council workers were quickly on site to rope off the area and make the site safe but the old tree was now safer lying on the ground than it had been standing.

The exposed timber at the base was seen to be soft and crumbly with numerous borer holes observed at the base.

Kurrajongs can grow to 20 metres in height and it was fortunate this one had not reached that height otherwise the police station may have been in danger.

It is always sad to see a lovely old native tree come down but nature had decided its fate not humans.

The Clifton Courier thanks Ida Blurton for reporting the fallen tree quickly to the newspaper.
