Oakey shines in Carnival of Flowers Floral Parade
The best that Oakey has to offer from agriculture, community spirit and collaboration was on display at the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Grand Floral Parade with the township’s contribution holding its own amongst the 60 other floats that took part in the mammoth event.
As well as making an impact with festival goers, the Oakey float made an impression on the parade judges with the entry bringing home third place in
the community float section.
Featuring representatives from the Oakey State High School, Academy of Dance - Oakey, Coops Construction QLD and Oakey Scouts, the float was surrounded by a wide cross section of the community who walked in the parade.
Oakey float coordinator Zoe Grainger said she couldn’t be happier with the result of the float which was the result of months of planning, hard work and community collaboration.
“I’m super happy, super excited with how it looked on the day,” she said.
“The day before the whole cone piece almost collapsed under the weight of the pieces on it, but it all came together in the end.”
Ms Grainger said she couldn’t have undertaken the project without the support of community members.
“The Totenhofers, Merle and David, were amazing, indescribable.
“This wouldn’t have happened without them.
“Coops providing the truck and the students and James Joyce from the high school, they were amazing too.”
Ms Grainger said she wasn’t expecting the float to take third place in the parade and was only focused on finishing the display for the parade.
“I really didn’t even think of winning a prize,” she said.
“I only wanted it to be together and looking good on the day, but getting third place has just topped it off.”
With the Carnival of Flowers almost finished for another year, Ms Grainger said she hasn’t considered whether she will coordinate the float next year.
“People have said that I should do it next year, but I’m not sure yet. I will make a decision early next year,” she said.
