Oakey High introduces free fresh fruits at lunch
With the support of a State Government grant, Oakey State High School has introduced a free fresh fruit program at lunchtime.
Through the School Foods Program, Oakey has received a grant of $10,000 which will be spent on fresh fruit at lunches this year.
The school is sourcing the fruit locally, through Cornetts SupaIGA Oakey.
Oakey State High School Principal Danny Keenan said his students had embraced the program, which began in Week 1 and will soon be running daily.
“We’re impressed to see how the students have embraced the program,” he said.
“They’re grateful to be eating healthy food for free.”
The program is being run by the Wellness and Chaplaincy staff Jodie Collins, Lauren Hannant, Yolande Robinson as well as volunteers from the Oakey Chaplaincy Committee, represented by volunteer Lyn Schultz on Friday.
It complements the already up-and-running YMCA Free Breakfast Program, which is adding cereal, fruit smoothies, and occasional pancakes to its menu this year.
