The team, co-coached by principal Danny Keenan and Year 7 coordinator Ethan Hearn ended the rounds with a 54 to 18 victory over Our Lady of the Southern Cross Dalby.

Oakey also defeated Highfields (twice as big as Oakey) St. Josephs and power house rugby league school St. Marys, throughout the 10 week season.

The boys face a daunting task in the preliminary final match up with Dalby State High (also a school twice as big as Oakey) and beat Oakey 20-6 when they met earlier in the year.

They have nothing to lose and will throw everything at them.

The game will be on July 10 at a to be decided venue.

Principal and coach Mr  Keenan said he understood it was the first time in a while that Oakey High had made the finals.

“It is the first time in what looks like at least 15 years that Oakey High has made a semi-final series like this in rugby league,” he said.

Mr Keenan thanked the Oakey Bears Senior Rugby League Club for the generous use of their facilities for some home games.

The team has travelled to Toowoomba and Gatton for away games.

In June last year, the Oakey Champion reported on the return of rugby league to Oakey High, which had not had a team in several years.

Some younger members of that squad, including Corbin McCormack, Gabriel De Almedia and Declan Jackson played above their age group and are still eligible to play this year.

The Oakey Champion wishes the team all the best in their semi-final clash against Dalby!
