Oakey/Goombungee juniors beat Pittsworth/Millmerran juniors to claim Bell Family Shield
Cricket was the winner as young players from throughout the Central Downs Cricket Association (CDCA) area demonstrated to a great crowd of supporters at Millmerran Recreation Reserve on Sunday (8th December).
All players were aged Under 17, and there was no shortage of cricketing talent and ability in the line-ups on both sides, with each fielding 12 active players.
In the extreme heat of the Millmerran sun, the North side (comprising Kulpi and Bowenville juniors) finished ahead at the end of 40 overs each.
It was a big step up for some of the players, but particularly the younger cricketers from Pittsworth and Millmerran Clubs.
CDCA South team captain, Lachlan Folker, won the toss and elected to bowl, trying to take advantage of humidity and avoiding the expected heat of the afternoon.
CDCA North finished its 40 overs with 9 for 240.
Top scorer was Brendan Ziebell who retired on 50 off 54 balls with good support from Billy Sipple (30 off 30), Zac Mirtschin (28 off 49), Jake Spies 25 off 28, Nayte Baker 21 off 38, B. Kucks 15 off 10 and Corbin McCormack 14 not out off 7.
Fall of wickets was 1-3 Sonny McCormack (2), 2-55 Billy Sipple (30), 3–69 Nayte Baker (21), 4–70 Nate McLaughlin (4), 5-76 Ben Schmidt (5), 6-76 Fred Bellert, 7-139 Zac Mirtschin (28), 8–19 Jake Spies (25), 9-225 B. Kucks (15), Corbin McCormack 14 not out, and William Bartkowski 2 not out.
Every player had a bowl, and the wicket-takers for CDCA South were Daniel Farrington 2-17 (4 overs), Charlie Richter 2-6 (3), Josh Lindeque 2-14 (3), Nathan Lindeque 1-5 (3), Stuart Coonan 1–20 (3) and Charlie French took 1 for 27 (3).
In reply CDCA South finished all out for 182 in 39.1 overs.
Lachlan Folker made 38 (40), Sam Folker 20 (28), Daniel Farrington 19 (33), Dominic Kirby 14 (26).
Fall of wickets was 1–14 Passchier (8), 2–23 Josh Lindeque (4), 3–54 Sam Folker (20), 4–93 Lachlan Kirby (19), 5– 15 Charlie French (3), 6–116 Lachlan Folker (38), 7-126 Stuart Coonan (1), 8–143 Nathan Lindeque (7), 9-153 Dominic Kirby (14), 10-163 Charlie Richter (8), 11-182 Daniel Farrington (19), and Zavier Webster not out for 1.
Best bowlers for CDCA North were Corbin McCormack 3-11 (3.1), Ben Schmidt 2-9 (4), Nayte Baker 2-10 (3), Jake Spies 2-19 (3), Brendan Ziebell 1-16 (4).
Player of the match was Brendan Ziebell for his 50 runs (retired), and 1 wicket.
He received a $200 Greg Chappell Cricket Centre voucher generously donated by Tim Mouritz, a talented former player for Millmerran Club and Central Downs.
CDCA North captain Sonny McCormack proudly received the Bell Family Shield following the match.
Our cricket season recommences on the 12th of January 2025 with Millmerran hosting Bowenville and Pittsworth hosting Kulpi in the second last fixture before the grand final is played on the 2nd of February.
Wishing everyone a happy Christmas and plenty of rain in the new year.
