This year’s float is being made into a beehive.

Float Organiser Zoe Grainger said she’s grateful for the support of the Men’s Shed members, who are volunteering their time and effort to help the project get ready for the Carnival.

Mens Shed President John Greenhalgh said the group is enjoying the challenge of creating the beehive.

“There are 32 hexagons,” he said.

“Each hexagon has six pieces and a total of twelve joins.”

“We’re making up a stand to go in the middle - 6 feet high with the boxes.

“It covers 4.5 metres I’m told.

“There are three sections with seven different batches.”

“It’s all marked and easy to follow.

One problem which presented itself to the group was the use of a glovesaw which was slightly out of shape, causing issues with the hexagon alignment.

“We’re using a second-hand glovesaw,” John said.

“One of the things wasn’t lining up.”

“You can imagine with a hexagon, all the sides have got to be pretty accurate, otherwise it will be out of shape.

“At the moment, it looks like we’ll have it done by the end of the month”

Time has been saved thanks to local business Coops, which supplied the medium-density fibreboard for the project.
