The Oakey Art Group learned about the "creative renditions" method of creating watercolour art during an Experimental Watercolour Workshop at the Oakey Art Studio last Saturday week.

Jan has 26 years’ worth of experience as an artist, living in Gympie and exhibiting across the state and down into northern New South Wales.

She was invited to Oakey by the Art Group, having run successful workshops there in years prior.

The process of “creative renditions” involves drawing an image based on a physical subject such as leaves or a photo and painting it in water colour.

Additional media can then be added, such as gouache, pen, pencils and patterned papers.

“This takes an ordinary still-life water-colour and gives it some energy,” Jan said

She took the group through turning a nature subject - such as plant leaves, twigs and stones into watercolour and painting from life.

However, the choice of subject is open-ended and can virtually be anything the artist chooses.

Jan describes herself as a “representational artist” and her philosophy that art stems from a “need to create” .

“Painting florals in watercolour is my particular passion,” she said.

“I strive to create uplifting paintings of truth and beauty, pieces that are a pleasure to live with and that inspire the viewer.”

Focusing on details of the natural world is a contemplative experience and I enjoy the process as much as the outcome.
