New look Eight Mile taking shape
The major upgrade of the notorious Eight Mile intersection between Allora and Warwick is progressing well.
Construction work on the $25 million project began in February last year.
There have been some delays as a result of wet weather however progress is being made.
The major feature of the upgrade is an overpass for motorists travelling south from Allora to Warwick.
Traffic between Warwick and Brisbane on the Cunningham Highway will travel beneath the new overpass.
Bridge clearances will be 6.1 metres on the Brisbane-bound carriageway and 7.1 metres on the Warwick-bound carriageway which will provide for over-size vehicles.
Other features of the project include construction of 1.5 kilometres of new roadway to allow for approaches to the overpass and a new Toowoomba to Brisbane exit/merge lane; two new culvert structures to assist with site drainage; installation of new lighting and improvements to existing lighting using LED luminaires; and installation of a new traffic monitoring camera.
The project is being jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments as part of the National Land Transport Network Upgrade program.
The federal government is providing $20 million and the state government $5 million.
The work was scheduled for completion by April this year, although this may be delayed due to the wetter than usual weather experienced during this summer.
