Moving across the tracks

After 117 years at premises on Clark Street across from the railway station, The Clifton Courier is moving to the old National Australia Bank building at 77 King Street.

The purchase of the new building was finalised on Thursday, 30 May.

The current owners of The Clifton Courier are Ted and Mim Rogers, who purchased the newspaper in 2007 and have since purchased newspapers in nearby towns.

“We chose to buy the more modern building at 77 King Street because we have faith in the future of Clifton, despite the unfortunate negatives that have occurred in the last few years, such as the closure of the only full service bank branch, the difficult time being experienced by the Clifton Community Health Service and the loss of the local newsagency,” Mr Rogers said.

“Looking at the positives, the Community Health Service is working toward a better future, the Raff Group has displayed its confidence in the Clifton district with a major upgrade of its local complex, the State Government is investing in significant improvements at the High School and Toowoomba Regional Council has consolidated the town’s water supply.

“Since we purchased The Clifton Courier and On Our Selection News in 2007, our company has grown to include the three newspapers at Oakey, Allora and Pittsworth, which we purchased to ensure the future of those local newspapers in their respective towns.

“Clifton has effectively become the head office and accordingly, our staff here has grown meaning the old premises we have been renting at 60 Clark Street, which has served its purpose for well over a century, can no longer comfortably accommodate our staff.

“The loyal team we have at Clifton deserves better premises in which to work and the former NAB building will provide that.

“These people have put up with the conditions in the old Courier building without complaint.

“We’ve often said that the good staff we have are our company’s greatest asset and our desire to look after them as best we can was the prime reason we took the opportunity to buy the former NAB building.”

The new office, 77 King Street, has been vacant since April last year when the NAB branch closed.

Nutrien Harcourts Clifton owners Ian and Kellie Brady completed the sale.

Ted and Mim Rogers are only the fourth owners of The Clifton Courier.

The Clifton Courier was founded in 1906 and moved into the premises on Clark Street in 1907, where it has remained for the past 117 years.

Since 1997, On Our Selection News has also been published weekly from the Clifton Courier office.

Due to the size of the move, it is expected to take several weeks to transfer to the new premises.

In the meantime, 60 Clark Street is where you should continue to go for any enquiries.

In due time, it will be published in The Clifton Courier when business will commence out of the new location.
