Moments captured in unique light

The glorious light of the Darling Downs is something artist Cecelia Krieg has battled, tamed and ultimately celebrated in her latest exhibition, Moments of My Life.

After 47 years on the land at Brookstead, Cecelia has been painting local landscapes for decades.

She is a founding member of the Pittsworth Art Group and runs weekly art classes every Wednesday at the art gallery.

The new exhibition opened on Friday at Sondrio on 67 and features new work, including 15 paintings sold on the opening night last Friday, as well as a retrospective collection of award-winning pieces.

As well as landscapes, Cecelia draws inspiration from the large garden she has nurtured through the years.

“Out on the plains it is so hot, so cold, so windy... I wanted to create a garden with trees and flowers, something beautiful in such a harsh climate and a harsh light,” she said.

“I had to create that soft light.”

The light is there in all Cecelia’s work, spilling gold into fields and across an old shed against a darkening backdrop, in a piece called ‘Driving Home Last Tuesday’.

“I had driven around the corner so many times - I had waited 45 years for that moment,” she chuckles.

Cecelia wanted to make special mention of the space where the exhibition is being held - Ros Scotney’s Sondrio on 67.

“It was Ros that suggested I have the exhibition and I just want to acknowledge this wonderful space that she makes available to the town of Pittsworth,” she said.

The exhibition was part of a busy weekend for the district with Showcasing Pittsworth bringing hundreds of visitors to town.

Moments of My Life continues until April 30.
