Millmerran students on track with STEM
Students from Millmerran State School had the opportunity to attend the second annual STEM on Track challenge at the University of Southern Queensland’s Toowoomba Campus last month with the support of the Inland Rail Skills Academy.
STEM on Track, which is delivered by the Inland Rail Skills Academy and the University of Newcastle, is designed to raise STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) awareness and build capability and aspirations in regional areas.
The program aims to deliver Science and Engineering Challenge events in communities along the Inland Rail alignment between Brisbane and Albury.
Those students who attended the program completed a number of challenges, including future power and railway bridge building, with Inland Rail staff lending a hand and showcasing STEM careers to the next generation.
Millmerran State School students, who ranked an impressive third on the day and won three of the individual challenges, competed against teams of year 9 and 10 students from 30 other schools from across the region.
Inland Rail Director of Engagement, Environment & Property, Rebecca Pickering, said the STEM on Track program highlights how STEM programs are a key component of ARTC’s Social Investment Program and the Inland Rail Skills Academy.
“The STEM on Track partnership is a brilliant way to showcase potential career opportunities in STEM, including the rail sector, to primary and secondary students along the Inland Rail alignment,” Ms Pickering said.
“We are committed to supporting the wellbeing and prosperity of the community along the Inland Rail alignment and this partnership with the University of Newcastle allows us to ensure students in regional communities benefit from these programs.”
