Millmerran remembers Jim Twidale
Jim Twidale will be remembered as a passionate farmer but also an incredibly active member of the Millmerran community in which he worked and served for many decades.
Jim Twidale was born in Millmerran to parents Tom and Heather Twidale.
He completed Year 8 at Millwood State School, then Years 9 and 10 at Toowoomba Grammar School.
After school he returned to ‘Duddawarra’ at Millwood to take up farming and in 1962 bought the family dairy and sheep farm with his brother John, venturing into beef cattle and pigs.
In 1963 he married Desley Elborne and they would have two sons, six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The family had various farming properties through the years.
In the 1990s at ‘Warragah’ they built a small feedlot.
Jim was passionate about cattle and got a great thrill out of showing his locally as well as at the Toowoomba Royal Show and the Brisbane Ekka.
Throughout his working life Jim remained an active member of the Millmerran community.
He was a Jaycee from 1968 to 1983 and was on the Junior Rugby League committee from 1971 to 1984 then on the Senior committee from 1987 to 1990.
He was secretary of the Millmerran Show Society for 28 years and received life membership in 1992.
Jim was a member of the Darling Downs Sub Chamber of Show Societies, Millmerran Memorial Sportsman’s Club, Millmerran Landcare, Bringalily Bush Fire Brigade, Millmerran Camp Oven Festival and was elected a Councillor on the Millmerran Shire Council in 2001.
All of this culminated in being named Lions Club Citizen of the Year in 2002.
Jim’s health deteriorated in recent years and he passed away peacefully on January 5 at age 80.
