The local farrier, and former Pitsworth State High School student, was selected as one of five Queenslanders in the Australian side.
Mat began playing at around age 8 and played in national teams at junior and intermediate levels before making the Australian team to play New Zealand in Warwick last year.
The team heading to the World Cup in June next year will comprise four women and four men from throughout Australia.
Because of quanrantine rules and the costs involved, teams do not travel with their own horses.
Instead each side is allocated a team of horses from which their players can choose so adaptability is key during the competition.
When the World Cup came to Warwick in 2019, 150 local horses had to be sourced.
