Loose dogs bite man on Mason Street

A relaxing cruise on his motorbike turned nasty for a Clifton man as two unrestrained menacing dogs attacked him on Mason Street recently.

A bite from one of the dogs tore through clothing and lacerated the skin on Daniel Hicks’ leg.

On Thursday, 12 May, Daniel Hicks and his wife turned onto Mason Street from Clark Street, a route they have taken many times, when he saw the two dogs loose on the street, one he said was a red heeler and the other looked like a boxer.

“We were both on motorcycles with my wife behind me,” Mr Hicks said.

“I stopped as soon as I saw the two dogs and waved my wife to go to the next street.”

Mr Hicks said his wife hesitated for a brief moment and the dogs started to look at her.

Out of instinct, he revved his bike to bring the dogs’ attention back on to himself and allow his wife to ride away.

He said the two dogs went for him, with the boxer attacking his boot on one side and the heeler biting his leg on the other side.

The bite was powerful enough to penetrate the pants Mr Hicks was wearing and draw blood.

He said he quickly drove off and the dogs followed him a fair way up Mason Street before returning to a yard.

The whole ordeal only took about ten seconds.

Mr Hicks said his parents have contacted both the police and Toowoomba Regional Council about the incident, although they had not received a response from Council.

He does not know who the dogs belong to and had not seen them before on his many trips past where the attack occurred.

Although the incident was bad, Mr Hicks said he is more concerned about what might happen if those dogs attack a child walking or riding their bicycle down the street.

His own daughter is used to travelling down the street to feed horses at a friend’s property, however after the attack Mr Hicks has told her not risk it.

He said he himself has not been back since and does not plan to do so.
