Oakey’s Christina Cherry, the first woman ever to play in the RAAF Band, performed a solo in the “Grant Us Peace” concert at St Luke’s Anglican Church.

The concert was organised by the Toowoomba Philharmonic Society, and featured Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Donna Nobis Pacem (or Grant Us Peace).

Christina first learned to play oboe as a child but gave it up until the age of 37.

After another gap following her stint in the RAAF Band, she was given her own oboe by the Air Force in 2014.

After moving to Oakey, in 2021, she joined the Toowoomba Concert Band and Concert Orchestra.

Currently, she plays with local double-reed group, the Bottletree Ensemble in Oakey, which rehearses on Fridays at the RSL.

If you play a woodwind instrument and would like to join, you can call Christina on 0427 575 708.
