Local farmer gives damaged header a new start in life

A Massey Ferguson header that sustained considerable damage as the result of a clash with a low level bridge in Toowoomba has a new role following a restoration by Nobby farmer Josh Mengel.

Josh Mengel’s reconstructed Massey Ferguson header is now an onion seed harvester, now quite different to what it looked like before it met with a low level bridge in Toowoomba.

The small header had been owned by Toowoomba-based Pacific Seeds but sustained a considerable amount of damage when the truck on which it was being carried tried to pass under a low level railway bridge on Jellicoe Street.

Pacific Seeds offered the old machine to one of its seed trial partners, the Mengel family at Nobby and Josh immediately got to work to see what he could do to restore it to something useful.

Showing considerable patience and ingenuity, Mr Mengel reconstructed the framework and front comb area and created a machine capable of harvesting onion seed.

It’s the first time such a machine has been created locally and it has been enthusiastically welcomed by local onion producer RDS Farming Co. at Nobby.

Until now harvesting onion seed has been a labour intensive exercise.

The Richards family has become notable as a provider of pickling onions to the family-owned Australian company Three Threes.
