The crash happened on the Beale Street-Davidson Street bend shortly after 2pm on Thursday afternoon 13th July when the learner car drifted across the road straight into the path of the utility.

The bonnet of the car crumpled as a result of the crash, while the utility was protected by its bull bar.

The grandfather, who was in his 60s was taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital with abdominal pain and a suspected broken rib, while the granddaughter suffered a minor chest injury from the seatbelt and did not require transport.

The utility driver suffered a wrist injury and was also transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital.

Sergeant John Cook of Oakey Police said drivers should make sure they take particular care when driving around schools and childcare centres.

“Particularly around the kindergarten, we’d like people to take specific care when driving,” Sr Cook said.

Earlier in the week, across the road from Oakey State High School, a truck hit a 40km/h school sign on Campbell Street, causing the sign to be knocked over.
