Landcare’s fossil workshop well attended
Cambooya Landcare was very pleased with the audience numbers at the special free event featuring a “Fossils on Farms” Workshop followed by the Annual General Meeting and a community barbecue at Felton Hall on Saturday, 9 November.
Glenn Knight, Secretary of Cambooya Landcare said the event was well supported by the community and it was great to see family groups and school age children being fascinated by the guest speakers and the fossils display.
“Eminent guests, Ian Sobbe well-known identify of Clifton Megafauna Group fame and Dr Gilbert Price, Senior Lecturer in Palaeontology at the University of Queensland have worked together at sites on the Darling Downs to uncover a wealth of information,” Mr Knight said.
“Their passion for the subject of palaeontology and fossils is infectious.
“We learnt that the Darling Downs is a rich area for discovering fossil remains of Megafauna, a group of extinct mammals, reptiles and birds that lived during the Pleistocene Period (1.8 million years ago and became extinct about 50000 thousand years ago) that were significantly larger than their modern-day counterparts.
“The audience was treated to an interactive display and discussion of fossils and bone fragments.
“Some people brought along their own findings to be examined and discussed by Ian and Gilbert.”
The workshop was followed by the 2024 Cambooya Landcare Annual General Meeting and a community meet and greet barbecue.
