Pittsworth Landcare is hopeful new interesting koalas west of the Great Divide will improve the prospects for our beleaguered populations.

A major problem for their conservation lies in the lack of scientific data about koalas on the Darling Downs. 

Pittsworth Landcare president Alastair Silcock said Pittsworth Landcare has long advocated to governments of all levels that there are viable healthy populations of koalas west of the Great Dividing Range. 

“For too long, all the focus has been on the plight of koalas nearer the coast, in areas such as Redlands, Logan, Lockyer and Sunshine Coast,” Mr Silcock said. 

“While these populations have been decimated by development and disease, and rightfully deserve urgent action, inland koalas also need protection. 

“We should be learning from the disregard and mistakes made on the coast and ensure we don’t repeat them here on the Darling Downs.
