Join the count to help boost koala numbers

November is Toowoomba Region Koala Count (TRKC) month and all residents are encouraged to participate to help our declining koala populations.

Organised by the Darling Downs Environment Council and supported by Pittsworth District Landcare Association, the inaugural TRKC took place in 2021 with more than one-third of sightings coming from the Pittsworth district.

Last year’s count only involved a small handful of dedicated volunteers, who are keen to be joined his year by many more pairs of eyes.

“There is little recognition in Brisbane or Canberra, where decisions are made, of our significant koala populations on the Darling Downs,” Pittsworth District Landcare president Alastair Silcock said.

“Koala Count is a good way to prove otherwise and maybe our grandchildren will still get to see koalas in the wild.”

Participation is easy - via your phone or photo plus email, or phone call or text to 0482 612 294.

If you’re digitally savvy, the best way is to download the iNaturalist app and submit your sighting with a photo, or submit the photo and location via email to pittsworthlandcare@gmail.com or add a sighting to the form on Pittsworth Landcare’s website.

DDEC and Pittsworth Landcare are focussing efforts on Saturday, November 19 in the Yarranlea, Southbrook and Kincora areas but sightings can be reported at any time up until November 30.

To help out on November 19, contact Alastair on 0482 612 294.

Landholders who would like their properties surveyed on November 19 are invited to do likewise.
