‘Jackos’ makes $50,000 for cancer charities
Members of the Riethmuller family are overwhelmed by the generosity of the community after their Jackos Hawaiian Pig Races event held last month at the Quinalow Hotel raised $50,000 for St Andrew’s Oncology Unit, Toowoomba and the Cancer Council Queensland.
Jenny, Craig, Courtney and Bryce Riethmuller host the event annually in memory of their father/ husband Wayne “Jacko’ Riethmuller and to raise funds for two organisations who helped them in their time of need.
This year around 700 people trekked to Quinalow from across the state to enjoy the country hospitality and compete for the coveted Jacko Cup.
Jenny Reithmuller said the funds raised this year are more than double the 2020 total and that this brings the total raised by the family to almost $100,000.
“We are stoked, speechless, can’t comprehend how much money we were able to raise from the Pig Races,” Mrs Reithmuller said.
“We were also lucky to have nurses from the St Andrew’s Oncology Unit come along. They dressed up and had a ball which was amazing.”
Mrs Reithmuller said it is mind-blowing to see how many people came from across the south east to attend the event.
“Word of mouth and friends telling friends is what made the event,” she said.
“As well as us raising funds, the Pig Races also brought extra money into Quinalow with people visiting the local store and the garage.”
The family hopes to visit the oncology unit in the future to present cheques to both charities.
