Independent candidate nominates for Groom

Following a strong performance at the 2022 federal election, independent candidate Kirstie Smolenski is again throwing her hat in the ring by running for the Groom electorate.

Previously, Ms Smolenski worked as a registered nurse and the family business manager and now works as a medical specialist while completing studies in law and nursing.

“I have raised my family here, built our business and worked many different roles in this wonderful community,” she said.

Ms Smolenski cited the building of the new Toowoomba hospital and the council’s renewed interest in commuter rail as two reasons for running again.

“Toowoomba had needed a new hospital for decades, and we are still desperate for a commuter rail to Brisbane. These were a clear priority for our community and the campaign.

“Our efforts were rewarded when the state government subsequently announced the necessary funding for the hospital, and our local government found a renewed interest in rail.”

At the 2022 Australian federal election, Ms Smolenski finished in fifth place for first preference votes, with 7 per cent, behind current MP Garth Hamilton from the LNP, Labor’s Gen Allpass, One Nation’s Grant Abraham and fellow independent Suzie Holt.

Continuing from her last campaign, she is running on the platforms of improved regional health resources.

“We are getting a new hospital, but who will staff it? We need more locally grown and educated healthcare staff, nurses, doctors and support people who will stay in the area. Many regions like ours are desperate for more workers,” she said.

Ms Smolenski is the founder of #tlcfortrc, a group with over 8,700 members that supports locally owned businesses.

“Small business is in my blood, and I have worked hard to support it,” she said.

“As an independent member of parliament, I will work hard to hold the major supermarkets accountable, looking out for small businesses - including our growers.

“During the last election, 13 per cent of the first preference vote shift away from the incumbent.

“The seat of Groom has been held by a conservative male since federation, and it’s time for change.

“We must fight for the funding and recognition that our region deserves.”

“My supporters and I have spent the last three years meeting people who are fed up and ready for change.

“Going on from the strong support of the last election, we are ready to increase our presence, spread the word and win at the next election.”

Ms Smolenski said she will be hosting various market stalls and public events in the near future and encourages the community to come talk to her about local issues.
